"It's busy, but it’s good," Niamh Mallon smiles when asked about combining an inter-county camogie career with Galway, while also operating as a nutritionist with Padraic Joyce's footballers in the west.

The schedule has been hectic, but Mallon finds a way to thrive. "Ultimately, we all have jobs and we're not full-time athletes and mine just happens to be working in sport," she adds.

"That's part of it, I may be flying to a game, there may be other girls flying to work in a restaurant and there may be nurses going to start their shift at 6pm and I'm no different.

"It's busy, but it's good. It's an environment that I'm very fortunate to be in. As I said, it's good but busy a lot of the time."

Matches and training are always on the agenda. Mallon, though, is adamant about the benefits that can be accrued by people. "I'm obviously going to be biased as it is my area of work but we're all chasing the one percenters in sport," she says.

"I think nutrition has a huge role to play in health outside of performance and setting foundations in sport that can only have positive impacts on your health through things like nutrition, training etc.

"It's only going to benefit players in the long-term, which I take a huge amount of satisfaction on whereby if you can help a player and let people improve in certain areas that can go with them the rest of their life, then you're happy enough with that."

Mallon finds that players are very receptive to receiving advice and suggestions. There is a thirst for knowledge and a willingness to develop. "Yeah, massively," Mallon responds.

"Players, athletes, they're chasing the one percenters now and they're massively curious, they're massively invested in their bodies. in their performance. and it's a joy to work with a lot of them to be honest with you."

Mallon was an influential performer in Galway's 2025 All-Ireland triumph and has relished being involved since transferring from Down. "It’s class and I've been very fortunate for the opportunity that Cathal (Murray) gave me to be part of it," she says.

"I think the opportunities to get better and challenge yourself they're unlimited really and that's something I'll never be able to take for granted.

"I'm just hugely fortunate and hugely grateful for the opportunity I've had over the past couple of years."
