In ómós James McHugh

James McHugh was a member of the 1992 Donegal All-Ireland SFC winning team. 
GAA President Jarlath Burns has extended the sympathies of the Association to the family and friends of the late Donegal footballer James McHugh, who has passed away.

Jarlath Burns said: “James was part of the Donegal team that made history in 1992 by bringing the Sam Maguire Cup to the county for the first time. He represented Donegal with distinction, winning two Ulster Championships and an All Star in 1992 alongside his brother Martin.

“His influence was felt far beyond his inter-county career, particularly through Cill Chartha and the generations of the McHugh family who have continued to represent Donegal.

“I remember James from when I played against him for Armagh in 1990. He was named Man of the Match that day and I had the greatest respect for him as a player and an opponent.

“It was no surprise to see him play such an important part in Donegal’s breakthrough All-Ireland success two years later. To see James and Martin lift the Sam Maguire together was a wonderful moment for their family and for Donegal.

“On behalf of the GAA, I extend my sympathies to Noreen, Eoin, Emma, the McHugh and O’Donnell families, and all of James’s friends, teammates and clubmates. Our thoughts are also with Noreen, whom we pray will make a full recovery.
