MAYO 1-17 SLIGO 1-11

Andy Moran’s reign as Mayo senior football team manager got off to a winning start as his side came from five points down to beat Sligo in Round 1 of the FBD Insurance Connacht Senior Football League.

They finished with a flourish, scoring 1-6 without reply in the final 10 minutes to get the better of a Sligo team that had been the better side for long stretches of the game.

The Yeats County dominated the ball in the first half but some poor shooting let them down as a more clinical Mayo opened up a four point lead after 16 minutes.

Dessie Sloyan’s team eventually zeroed their sights in and when Paul Kilcoyne struck for a 29th minute goal they drew level.

They moved 1-10 to 0-8 ahead by the 40th minute, but then Mayo came with that late scoring surge with Enda Hession palming home the clinching goal three minutes from full-time.
